Dear Parents:
We are working diligently to develop plans to meet student needs as we make the shift to distance learning due to the national response to COVID-19 and school closures. Obviously, our efforts to provide educational continuity for all of our students during the school closure period include strategic planning for our students receiving special education services. Although these services may look different in light of these unfortunate circumstances, our commitment to your child and your child’s success remains the same.
Teachers and related-service providers will make every effort to adjust your child’s program in order to meet your child’s need, to the extent possible, in the temporary distance-learning environment. Our staff will continue to monitor student progress to determine what, if any, adjustments are needed for your child. In addition, any required evaluations and IEP meetings will be held via telephone or video conference call to the greatest extent practicable and feasible.
As quickly as they can be arranged, you will be receiving phone calls from the staff who currently serve your child to assess your child’s technological needs, your communication preferences and to discuss, with your input, what will be accessible, reasonable and appropriate for your child during the school closure period and in light of this shift to distance learning, including through telephone calls, virtual services or activities, and/or paper assignments.
We are eager to work together in good faith and partnership with you to design and implement an effective program for your child, in light of the current circumstances. We look forward to collaborating with you. Should you have questions at this time, please contact the St. Clair County Board of Education at 205-594-7131 and ask for the special education department.
Best regards,
Nona C. Vickers
