Welcome to Ms. Hancock's Class!

  • Hi! I teach 6th grade English Language Arts and sponsor the OMS Scholars Bowl team. I graduated with my bachelor's in secondary education and English from UAB in the spring of 2021, and I began my teaching career at OMS last fall. I love working with middle schoolers because it's such a formative time in students' lives, and there are so many opportunities to really change the trajectory of a student's educational experience before they enter high school. I especially love helping our sixth graders navigate the transition from fifth grade and seeing their independence and confidence grow over the course of the year. Middle school was when I first fell in love with reading, so it is very special to me to be able to share in the joy of reading with my sixth graders and to introduce them to lots of exciting new literature. My goal every day is that my students leave my room knowing that I care about them and that their abilities to read critically and write with clarity are powerful tools they can use to advance themselves in whatever endeavors they choose.

If you ever have any questions or if I can be of any help to you, please email me at ashleigh.hancock@sccboe.org

Some fun facts: I love storytelling in all its forms—books, movies, music, video games, Dungeons and Dragons, everything!  I enjoy eating cooking and try to make at least one completely new-to-me recipe a week. I have two cats named Cricket and Ladybug, and I have a longhaired Miniature Dachshund named Percival Fredrickstein Von Musel Klossowski de Rolo IV. We call him Percy for short and only use his full name when he's up to no good (which is most of the time that he is awake).
