Mary Morrow

I have the amazing job of being teaching art, photography, sculpture, yearbook and being the sponsor for the drama club, "Saints in the Spotlight." I am constantly amazed by the depth of talent I see everyday in my classroom. I started teaching when I was 5. I would come home from school and teacher my younger sister what I had learned that day. We had a board and desk- what more did I need? My love for art took off when I was in the fourth grade when I started drawing Garfield the cat and the Smurfs. I am a proud alumni of SCCHS, Class of 1991. I have a BA double major in Art Studio-Graphic Design and Art History and a Masters in Education all from UAB. I was just accepted into the EDS Teacher Leader program at JSU. I am also a National Board Certified Teacher. Over the years our art students have displayed their work and won awards at the county, state, and national level. Some of my favorite art projects we do every year is Bob Ross oil painting and the charcoal still life. Last year we revived our drama program, "Saints in the Spotlight" and performed "Game of Tiaras" at CEPA in Pell City. As the St. Clairion yearbook sponsor I have had the opportunity to work wish amazing student photographers, journalists, and designers. Since 2004, the St. Clairion has won state/regional/national awards. Outside of the classroom I love being a proud Soccer and Stage Aunt. My nephew who is 6 plays soccer and takes karate and my niece, age 11, is on the stage whenever she can. She is part of a competitive drama group, CCT Elite in Gadsden. Because of the impact theatre has had on her life, I was inspired to sponsor our drama club. I enjoy seeing the light bulbs of creativity go off, that "Aha" moment that students have when they are being creative in the art room, in the yearbook room, or on the stage.

Announcements

  • Visual Arts classes have been busy this nine weeks!  Here are some highlights:

-All classes decorated the teachers' doors for homecoming. Everyone did an amazing job and they added so much to the hallways. It was great that artists could show off their talents and school spirit!

-Sculpture class worked on creating facial reconstructions, redesigning shoes for the "Cinderella's Revenge" project. Next they will create book art and start throwing pottery on the wheel.

-Photography created pinhole photos and photograms in the darkroom. They are taking pictures with 35mm cameras and will develop their film and photographs soon.

-Art 1 and 2 students have been mastering volumetric shading. Recently they created Day of the Dead skull designs, painted pumpkins, and completed a bone study, shading in reverse. Next they will create artwork for the library.

I am so thankful that I get to work with such talented students!

Fee Reminder: All visual arts classes have a yearly fee of $20. Thank you for your support.
