Changes to the Math Course of Study

Important information about the new Math Course of Study from Mr. Trucks, St. Clair County Schools’ Secondary Education Coordinator.

The purpose of this information is to share with you the basic structure of the new Math Course of Study recently approved by the Alabama State Board of Education. The new Course of Study will change the courses offered for students in grades 6-12. The following changes will be implemented starting in August 2020:

  • 6th graders will take 6th grade Math with new standards
  • 7th graders have the option of 7th grade Math or 7th Grade Accelerated Math
  • 8th graders have the option of 8th grade Math or Algebra 1
  • Starting in 2021-2022, 8th graders have the option of 8th grade Math or 8th grade Accelerated Math – Algebra 1 will no longer be offered in 8th grade
  • All 9th graders in 2020-2021 will take a version of Geometry with Data Analysis
  • Current 9th graders who have completed Algebra 1 will take Geometry with Data Analysis in 2020-2021

Students entering 10th-12th grades who have completed Geometry will take courses scheduled by the current 2016 Math Course of Study.
